Birth Injuries Caused by Traumatic Techniques
During the process of delivering your baby, a medical practitioner may experience complications. Medical professionals are typically prepared for any complications that may arise, but some delivery techniques are known to be dangerous to the well-being of the newborn if not properly executed.
Tools Used in a Mechanical Delivery
Some tools and techniques used when a mother cannot deliver her baby without assistance that are associated with death or injury include:
- Vacuums – a vacuum may assist in delivery if the mother or baby shows signs of distressed vitals. This technique can be helpful and effective if used properly. If the vacuum is misplaced on the baby’s head, used for more than a 20 minute period, used to change the position of the baby, or used on a premature baby, the practitioner may be guilty of malpractice for misuse of the tool.
- Forceps – like the vacuum technique, forceps can be used to safely guide the baby through the birth canal and save lives when used properly. Unfortunately, forceps require an experienced physician as too much pressure can severely injure the baby. If the mother is not fully ready to deliver or the baby is too large, forceps should not be used.
Birth injuries commonly associated with these tools include brain hemorrhaging, injuries to the skull, delays in cognitive development, and cerebral palsy.
